The Association of Gozitan Employees in Malta has said that it is “deeply concerned” over the decision by Steward Health Care Malta to employ foreign nurses within the Gozo General Hospital.

In a statement, it said that it had received a number of complaints from various Gozitan nurses who work in Malta, with regards to this situation within the Gozo General Hospital, which is administered by Steward Health Care.

AGEM went on to say that, “such decision would negatively impact Gozitan nurses working in Malta and whose wish was always to serve in the Gozo General Hospital.”

“This decision would reduce the already limited prospects of these nurses to work in their home island Gozo,” it added.

The Association also argued that this occurs in accordance to Government regulations and the list of seniority that allows workers to work from Gozo according to the number of years serving in Malta.

It stressed that, “where and when possible Gozitan employees (from all walks of life) working in Malta should be provided with the opportunity to work permanently in Gozo.”

“Only in such a way would we ensure more work in Gozo for Gozitans,” said AGEM. “Therefore, AGEM urges the health authorities and the Ministry for Health to provide a clear and detail explanation of this case to reduce uncertainty and enhance transparency.”

The Association concluded by calling on Steward Health Care Malta to reconsider its position in favour of Gozitan nurses working in Malta.
