Angelo Gafà has been officially appointed as the Commissioner of Police. This was announced in a statement from the Government on Tuesday, which said that the appointment was confirmed following scrutiny and approval by the Standing Committee on Public Appointments.

This appointment follows a public call and a subsequent selection process conducted by the Public Service Commission. This is the first time in Malta’s history a Commissioner of Police has been appointed by this procedure, the Government said.

The Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri, noted that this change was recognised positively by the Venice Commission report in a report on governance in this country.

The Minister said that this change is one of a series of reforms that will be taking place within the Police Force.
