On Friday, the 26th of June, to mark the first month from the passing away of Charles Borg, at Munxar Parish Church, a Holy Mass was celebrated by Parish priest Fr Michael Said, nephew of Charles.
In his homily, Fr Michael said that God has plans for us which differ from ours and which we cannot understand.
However in a Christian spirit, even the separation from someone dear to us is no time for regrets. In this instance, it is time to look back at the great moments we shared with Charles and to keep up the values that he has left behind.
It was apt for Fr Michael to recollect that Charles was a staunch Liverpool supporter and that he was, in some other mysterious way, celebrating this year’s Championship victory. In the members of the congregation, the parish priest’s words could not help but bring to mind, in a Christian sense that “We never walk alone!”
Charles was a joyful person, humble and positive, who liked to weigh his words. It was easy to make friends with him as he was very approachable.
Charles Borg was born on April 18th 1931 and was bred in Fontana. Like most of the children and youths of that village, he used to pass the summer months, with his family, fishing and swimming at Xlendi when that beach was still truly a “sandy” one.
He made a career with the Education Division as an educator in Physical Education, first in Gozo, and then in Secondary Schools (Malta) and Technical Institute (Paola). In the early 1960s he served as Vice-President of the Gozo Football Association.
Charles never failed to be of service to others, even it at a personal cost. This characteristic was in him a reflection of the Christian spirit of the family in which Charles was born and bred; and it remained an imprint which marked him throughout life.
From now on, whenever I visit my late parents, interred at the Santa Maria Cemetery, I will stop for some minutes of reflection and prayer at Charlie’s resting place.
I extend my deepest sympathy to his wife, Doris and all the family.
