Following the denial by the Resources Ministry of Alternattiva Demokratika’s claim that the government has expert opinions showing that a wind farm off Mellieha, on Is-Sikka l-Bajda, would not be viable, Arnold Cassola, Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika challenged the ministry to publish the opinions in its possession.

“If the government truly is in possession of favourable reports, it must immediately publish these studies, since these would have been funded by the Maltese and Gozitan tax payer. These studies are the ones that convinced the Prime Minister to announce, in the November Budget, the siting of a 130 million euro wind farm in Is-Sikka l-Bajda. All Maltese and Gozitans have a right to view the reports on which the government has based its decision and judge whether the prevailing meteorological conditions at Sikka l-Bajda are ideal for a wind farm.”

Prof Cassola concluded, “Alternattiva Demokratika is always at the forefront in backing our government on any project based on obtaining energy from renewable sources. However, we do not want projects to be announced without the scientific studies on these projects being conducted beforehand and made available to public opinion. The Resources Ministry should refrain from continuing to withhold the studies that have already been made on this project.”
