The St Francis Square regeneration project was officially inaugurated on Monday evening by Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri.
The square has been given a completely new look with an investment of € 2 million and the Prime Minister said that an investment such as this “reflects the view of this government to continue to improve the quality of people’s lives.”
The St. Francis Square project, through which hundreds of vehicles travel en-route to various locations, included many works, such as an increase in pedestrian areas, installing a new lighting system in the square, strengthened rainwater systems and the installation of new outdoor furniture so that the public can sit and relax while enjoying this square.
Dr Abela said that he was proud that last week Malta negotiated a package of €2.25 billion in European funds, a minimum of 10% of which will be allocated to projects in Gozo.
He also noted with satisfaction how the Gozitan economy had recovered and warned against allowing “unfounded fear to take root in society.” He said that “as a people we must move forward into wealth by reconciling the health, economy and quality of life of the Gozitan and Maltese people.”
The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri said that in recent months, the Ministry for Gozo had “worked non-stop to get to this point.”
“We have dedicated many resources so that this square in Victoria was completed in the shortest possible time with the least inconvenience to residents. Infrastructure is not only about asphalting roads, it also means regenerating our squares because they are the centre of any town or village activity,” said the Gozo Minister.
He explained that the regeneration project and landscaping of St Francis Square “continues to complement the objective of the Ministry for Gozo, which is to offer a wonderful environment to all Gozitans and visitors.”
