The Medical Association of Malta has registered an industrial dispute, saying that due to “continued interference in the work of the Superintendent of public Health by the office of the prime Minister, against scientific advice.”

In a statement the Association said that because of this the following has occurred, “a declaration that the public health emergency due to Covid-19 has concluded, where clearly all evidence points otherwise. All public health measures have been repealed or reduced to guidelines not enforceable by fines.”

The MAM said that directives are being issued to members, that “with immediate effect all doctors in the vulnerable groups as declared in legal notices in March or approved by management are only to work on administrative or telework duties and avoid contact with patients.”

It added that “all other doctors are urged to help in work normally done by doctors in vulnerable groups and make sure that patients get all the necessary treatment.”

MAM also said that “repeated statements have been made by the Prime Minister encouraging people not to comply to the recommendations of the Superintendent of public health, not only in words, but also by example where a concert and a mass political activity was held and in which he participated where notably neither social distancing or wearing of masks took place.”

The Association also highlighted “the active promotion of mass activities by the Malta tourism authorities, including Minister Julia Portelli, creating grave danger of a major and uncontrollable epidemic.”

It warned that “as a result, not only a grave danger of an epidemic has been created, but also a serious threat to the health and safety of the Medical staff and their loved ones.”

For the above reasons the MAM stated that it is declaring an industrial dispute and demanding that as from Monday, the 3rd of August:

“All permits for mass events of more than 10 people be stopped with immediate effect and all approved permits withdrawn.

“that all public health care facilities revert to the emergency mode as had occurred from March to June.”

MAM also gave notice that as from Monday, the 3rd of August, it will be directing its member only to perform emergency duties should the situation remain unchanged.

MAM concluded by saying that it “reserves the right to take legal action against whoever by his decisions, or omissions, may lead to life-threatening to any of its members.”
