Gozo NGO Wirt Ghawdex has expressed its concern to the Planning Authority regarding two current development proposals for Xlendi.
In a statement, it said that these “two extensive proposals” are adjacent to each other and, it warned, if approved, “will change the aesthetics and the character of the picturesque bay of Xlendi forever.”
According to Wirt Ghawdex, the “massiveness of the two proposed developments is completely out of proportion with the size of Xlendi Bay.”
PA 03818/20 is proposing the construction of 3-level basement garages with overlying 60 apartments and 6 penthouses over current undeveloped land.
PA 04587/20 is proposing the first phase of a project which will see the demolition of Hotel Xlendi and the subsequent excavation of the site. A second phase of the project is indicating the intention to build a 4 star hotel together with 5 levels of parking.
Wirt Ghawdex stressed that whilst it is never against development so long as it is carried out in a controlled manner and in total respect towards the area where development is taking place, however in this case, it asked whether there is anything sustainable about these two developments?
The NGO argued that if approved, “these two developments will have great repercussions on traffic, waste generation, the quality of life in general, the cleanliness of the sea, and the quality of Xlendi as a holiday destination in itself, to name but a few impacts.”
From an aesthetic point of view, the proposed façade of PA 4587/20 “jars terribly with the older houses in Triq San Xmun and does not complement them in any way,” it said.
These houses are among the oldest structures in Xlendi and Wirt Ghawdex said it believes that they deserve some kind of protection.

i have always recommended that a tax placed on empty properties in gozo could help solve the constant building spree .

political suicide but it would be the only answer. Why cannot the authorities see what they are allowing to happen in Gozo – why don’t they learn from what has already happened in Malta? Maltese come to Gozo for weekends and holidays because it is nicer – not so crowded, dirty and overdeveloped – or did I miss something?
