The Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival is the second most important festival in China. It is a national holiday and is celebrated on the day the moon is believed to be at its fullest, on the 15th day of the eighth month in the lunar calendar.

Its origins date back to more than 3000 years ago when people began to worship the moon to celebrate and hope for a good harvest. Nowadays the Mid-Autumn Festival symbolises family reunion, peace and prosperity.

It’s customary for people to be together with their family and for those that miss their hometown and loved ones. Even if someone is not able to be with their family, they share and appreciate the same moon which gives them the sense of being together and connected all the same.

On this day, people exchange and eat moon cakes, which are round pastries with a rich filling such as red bean paste or lotus seed paste, drink Osmanthus wine, light lanterns and prepare offerings to the moon.
