Ten Voluntary Organisations who work with animals will share the sum of € 76,893.40 in recognition of the work and contribution they are giving in this sector, especially during this time of Covid-19.
In a statement the government said that this was made possible through the Animal Welfare Fund Grant Support Scheme from the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, with the aim of further improving animal protection in our country.
One of the organisations that will benefit from these funds is the CSAF (Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines) sanctuary in Cospicua which was visited by the wife of the Prime Minister Lydia Abela, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo and Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport and Volunteering Clifton Clifton.
Minister Anton Refalo explained how the aim of the Animal Welfare Fund Grant Support Scheme is to carry out projects that improve animal rights, raise awareness of the responsibilities of animal carers, and assist in progress of good practice in animal protection. He added that, the quality of care as well as community rehabilitation services to provide better facilities for animals will also be enhanced.
He said, “I will continue to work to strengthen networking for animal welfare, quality of care, as well as community rehabilitation services to provide better facilities for animals.”
Dr Lydia Abela said animal rights will remain at the top of her agenda. “Animals do not have a voice to talk about what annoys them or want they want to change, so it is up to us to do this work,” said the Prime Minister’s wife.
She stressed the need for our country to look at a change in the law on the conditions in which animals are kept in our country and above all to see that the authorities are given more resources to enforce the law against animal cruelty.
“The funds we are giving today will help keep the organisations going from month to month, but I am committed that this will not be an isolated grant but that support for animal rights in our country will continue to increase,” concluded Dr. Abela

“support for animals rights will increase”…….it certainly needs to. Still no 24/7 Animal Ambulance for Gozo – Animal Welfare Gozo not allowed to act on horse cruelty cases – it is dealt with by Malta only so of course nothing happens – the list goes on. Instead of empty promises let’s see some action! The charities do a wonderful job with limited funds and staffing but it’s not enough.
