Malta meat free week challenge - Be part of the solution to Save the PlanetVeggyMalta is organising the Malta Meat Free Week challenge for the third year running with a record number of individuals registering to take the challenge this year across Gozo and Malta.

The challenge starts this coming Monday, the 5th of October till Sunday, the 11th of October.

The main theme for this year is – Be part of the solution to Save the Planet.

During the Covid-19 lockdown we have all seen that the environment can recover if we change our patterns and lifestyle, the organisers said.

They stressed that “we need to realise that there is a direct connection between the food we eat and climate change, rainforest destruction and habitat and biodiversity loss.”

Livestock farming takes up “a shocking 26% of all the land on Earth and is also directly linked to rainforest destruction like Amazon fires which are done to constantly make space for livestock farming,” they stated.

Malta Meat Free Week and VeggyMalta co-coordinator Darryl Grima said that “meat and dairy farming contributes to climate change as much as all cars, trains, planes and ships combined.”

“By switching to a plant-based diet or even by reducing your meat and dairy intake, you can be effectively part of the solution to save our planet! Going meat free is the greenest thing an individual can do,” he added. “That is why we ask people to do the challenge and go one week zero meat.”

A staggering 6 million animals are killed every hour for food across the world. So large are these numbers that the number of domestic livestock mammals is far greater the number of wild mammals. The organisers pointed out that “most of these farmed animals live in squalled conditions.”

Malta Meat Free Week has managed this year to involve various stakeholders from importers and retailers and restaurants in this common aim. Various shops including the major supermarkets and online shops across Malta and Gozo have chosen to support the initiative and will be offering meat-free products at discounted prices.

Around 50 restaurants are participating and making additional meat free offers for their clients for the week.

Those who want to join the challenge can do so by going on https://maltameatfreeweek.com/ and join online.

This year the organisers are offering a weekend break at the Ramla Bay Resort for 2 people as a prize for somebody the completes the challenge. The initiative also has a facebook page.

The campaign is sponsored by Alpro and Valsoia as main sponsors and Sheese (a vegan cheese), Misura Privolat (milk and egg free range), Good Earth and Bird’s Eye Green Cuisine (meat alternatives) as sponsors.

The organisers said it is important that people participating tag maltameatfreeweek on facebook or Instagram with their photos.
