More police will be on the streets to ensure restrictions are enforced on all Covid-19 measures issued by the public health authorities, and at the same time encourage the wearing of masks, Prime Minister Robert Abela has said.

Dr Abela was speaking to journalists at the end of the first session of the European Council in Brussels during which, among other things on the agenda was the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister said that all European Leaders are concerned about the rising rates of infections in every European country.

He said increasing enforcement and wearing masks are very important, “as they will help keep the pandemic under control.”

“The main appeal made in the Council today was that we cannot close our economies. That is to say we have to keep a delicate balance between economy and health. A very important balance in a situation that could last for months. It is not only an issue of implementing or increasing restrictions, but that it is sustainable in the short, medium and potentially long term,” said the Prime Minister.
