Tomorrow, the 23rd of April, the Catholic Church will recall the solemnity of the Martyr, St. George, patron of the city of Victoria and protector of Gozo.

On this occasion, the La Stella Philharmonic Society, of Victoria, will perform a musical programme in St. George’s Square, Victoria.

The programme will include musical excerpts ranging from classical music and contemporary opera style.

The Band will be under the direction of Profs. Joseph Vella, who will open the programme with arrangements by Joseph Compello, The Band at the Opera, which contains extracts of selections from Carmen by Bizet, Il Trovatore by Verdi, William Tell by Rossini and Leoncavallo by Pagliacci.

These will be followed by the Fanfare for the Common Man by American composer Aaron Copland. There will also be eighties flashbacks, arranged by Paul Murtha, and a selection from the popular musical The Phantom of the Opera, by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The La Stella Band will close this program with a performance of the 1812 Overture by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, accompanied by entertainment in the square.

This programme is followed by a procession with the statue of St. George on horseback, by Alfred Camilleri Cauchi, from St. George’s Square to Republic Street.

The programme starts at 8.00pm following the solemn Pontifical mass at the Basilica of St George, which is being led by HE Mons Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo and Dean of St. George’s Collegiate
