Saint Hubert Hunters (KSU) has called on authorities to take a lead from those in Italy to protect hunters and trappers from “acts of extremism” and introduce a law to protect them including with hefty fines.

In a statement, KSU referred to “a recent act of aggression against a trapper, which had been confirmed by a member of KSU – a hunter, who had witnessed the incident.”

It also referred to a video, which KSU said “showed a foreign couple releasing a bird from a legally kept cage in a private home.”

“These and other illegal acts of provocation occur regularly against hunting enthusiasts,” KSU said, “by extremist people who do not agree with these hobbies and are willing to take the law into their own hands. Both incidents were reported to the Police.”

KSU pointed out that “the government has introduced harsh laws against abuse in hunting, however there is no law that protects the hunter and trappers practising his legal hobby without provoking disturbance, acts of hatred, entry into the property privacy, breach of privacy, interference or continuous scrutiny by extremist people.”

Saint Hubert Hunters concluded by saying that it hopes that the Maltese government will recognise the situation “where a section of foreigners as well as locals are taking the law into their own hands to impose their views against the legal practices of hunting and legislate against this kind of dangerous extremism that is having dire consequences.”
