The National Literacy Agency within the Ministry for Education and Employment is organising online live seminars for families expecting a baby – with teach your baby to read sessions.
They explained that babies learn language by taking in information through their senses of hearing and sight as they learn to process the meanings behind those sights and sounds.
They use their mouths, tongues, and ears as they learn to mimic the sights and sounds of other people in order to create their own sounds and communications.
The organisers said that this spoken language development compliments the child’s literacy achievement later on in life. Therefore, it is essential that parents/guardians are aware of how to encourage their baby’s language development in a meaningful way and how to expose them to age-appropriate reading books.
During these seminars issues such as how to encourage the development of emergent literacy skills, even before babies are born, will be discussed. The organisers said that the seminars are run in collaboration with Parentcraft Services. Families may choose whether to attend a talk in Maltese or in English.
These seminars are organised live on Microsoft Teams. Families can attend the two sessions and participating families who attend both seminars can obtain a pack of literacy resources from the National Literacy Agency, Joseph Abela Scolaro Street, Hamrun.
