123 new Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the past 24-hours, and with 105 recoveries, making the number of active cases at 2,051. With 3,100 swabs taken over this period.

This takes the total number of cases up to 10,320. There have been 8,120 recoveries and now 149 deaths, the Ministry said. 439,477 swab tests have been taken since the start of the pandemic in Malta.

Speaking at Friday’s weekly update, the Superintendent of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci said that there has been another death, an-82-year old man, who tested positive for the virus on the 21st of November and passed away last night at the St Vincent de Paul Residence.

In Gozo, there are currently 68 active cases from the total number, with 3 patients in hospital.

In Malta, Prof Gauci said that there are at Mater Dei: 45 patients in various wards, 17 in ITU, and 11 in IDU. There are 23 at Boffa, 10 at Karin Grech, 24 at St Thomas, 3 at Mount Carmel and 64 at the Good Samaritan Long-Term Care Facility.

The 7-day moving average is 113, this is a decrease from 120 last week. She said that the majority of cases were aged between 25 and 44, however they had noted an increase in cases in those aged between 85 and 90. There are 4,168 people who are currently in quarantine, these include care workers.

Prof Gauci reiterated that the public must follow the mitigation measures, including the correct wearing of masks, to help keep the disease under control.

Speaking about the arrival of the vaccine, which is thought will receive EU approval by the end of December, Prof Gauci said that it is due to be in Malta in January, however, she stressed that mitigation measures would continue until everyone is vaccinated.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, has not as yet updated its figures for today, and is showing that the number of cases recorded up to yesterday is at 10,101 and the number of deaths showing as 146. The 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 for Malta, is 314.5. Malta is currently in 21st position in the EU/EEA and UK. Luxembourg is at the top with 1213.2, followed by Croatia with 1083.5.

Public Health Authorities said that anyone who needs to take a test should call 111 to set an appointment, even if they do not have any symptoms. It is to be noted that due to the large volume of calls, it can take some time to get through.

All swabbing centres are open every day, including the one in Gozo, however appointments must be made on the above number.
