50 local councils in Gozo and Malta are to benefit from a total of €230,000 through the the Local Council Care Fund 2020 project.
The projects were launched by Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government José Herrera and the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights Anton Refalo.
This fund is offering financial support to 50 local councils to promote initiatives and projects in favour of abandoned animals and include the establishment of dog parks and cat cafes, among other projects, in various localities in both Gozo and Malta.
50 applications were accepted and were awarded 80% of the costs totalling €318,727.27.
Minister Anton Refalo emphasised the aim of the LC CARE project, and pledged to continue to support local councils in carrying out projects that have the potential to improve animal welfare.
This is financial support from the Ministry to local councils, thus encouraging them to work on projects that safeguard the welfare of abandoned animals on the road, as well as promoting greater awareness of this situation in different categories in society.
The priority areas highlighted are: cat cafes, dog parks, maintenance projects and cat stations to improve their environment and well-being, incentives for veterinary services for abandoned animals, contribution to specific costs such as medicine, food and transport.
