The National Blood Transfusion Service has highlighted the fact that in our country the largest band of people who donate blood are those between 36 and 45 years of age, followed by those who are between 46 and 55.

The Service went on to explain that although “these people are at an age when there is a possibility that they may have to start treatment to control blood pressure, it is worth remembering that those who are on blood pressure tablets are not exempt from donating blood.”

“It is important to say that this is possible from one month after starting treatment, and after confirmation by the attending physician that the dose is adequate and the tablets are compatible with the patient.

The Service is urging more Gozitans to please take the time to help others and donate their blood.

Donations can be made at the Centre in Xewkija, on Sunday, the 31st of January from 8am to 1pm (last registration until 1pm).

The donation centre is located at the Xewkija Clinic, in Triq tall- Hamrija, between the Primary School and the Bocci Club.

The Service reminds everyone that it is important to always take your Identity Card, or Driving License or Maltese Passport and to drink plenty of water beforehand. Also, please encourage others to donate if possible.

Anyone currently waiting to take a Covid-19 test, or who has had the test and is waiting for the result, cannot give blood.

The Service stressed that due to the Covid-19 situation all necessary measures are being taken to protect anyone who comes to donate blood, as well as the professionals who provide them with a service.
