The Gozo Employment Refund Scheme and Gozo Teleworking Scheme have both been launched today, aimed at helping to create more jobs in Gozo, the Ministry for Gozo said in a statement today.

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri said that that these two measures which were announced in the last Budget “are expected to encourage employers to offer Gozitan employees more stable, adequate and long-term contracts.”

The Gozo Employment Refund Scheme will be offsetting new job salaries for another year. Minister Clint Camilleri expressed satisfaction that during 2020, this scheme proved to be successful, with more applications submitted than 2018 and 2019 together.

He explained that, “this is a scheme that rewards the creation of new jobs against a background of difficult economic situations all over the world.”

Ronald Sultana, Director of Tourism and Economic Development within the Ministry for Gozo, said that this scheme will offer a salary reimbursement of up to € 6,000 over a period of 3 years to companies that have a base in Gozo and employ new people with the company during 2021. However, in order to incentivise job stability, reimbursement will not be given equitably every year. In fact, in the third year, the reimbursement will increase to €3,000, he said.

The Gozo Teleworking Scheme will benefit Maltese-based companies that offer Gozitan workers a teleworking facility, up to a maximum of 10 workers per year, per company, the Gozo Minister said.

Camilleri explained that the fund will be offering financial incentives on two tracks. The first will be a partial reimbursement of 75% up to a maximum of €850 on expenses for technological equipment per employee and the second reimbursement of salary will be up to a maximum of €10,000 over a period of 3 years – which will be offered on a pro-rata basis according to the amount of days per week the employee is assigned telework.

Sultana explained that the Ministry for Gozo is looking at the sustainability of this scheme sensitively, because those companies that offer the long-term telework facility, will have an annual reimbursement as follows: in the first year a maximum of €3,000, in the second year a maximum of €3,000 and in the third year maximum of €4,000.

The Minister for Gozo concluded that these two schemes, together with other schemes that have been launched, will continue to help generate more quality and sustainable employment in Gozo.
