The Nadur Local Council is to present its objection and reservations to this proposed development by Titan Developments at Triq il-Qortin to build no less than 71 apartments.

This decision was made in an unanimous agreement, after Councils discussions regarding the proposed construction of 71 apartments over four storeys, 74 garages on two basement levels, and a communal pool in Nadur, Gozo.

The expiry date for representations on the case is the 19th of February.

The Council, in a statement, argued that “this proposed development is massive and is certainly not taking place in areas considered as `Primary Urban Area,’ much less, this land has never been developed before.”

It went on to point out that “the proposed development does not match the rural characteristics of the area, apart from the fact that part of it falls in an outside development zone (ODZ), and it will continue to destroy more arable agricultural land.”

The Council said that it is also raising other reservations, including those related to major parking problems, the fact that this is a dead end and even a narrow road, no sewerage services where the development is being proposed, rain water path issues, and even the affects on the state of the new road resurfacing.

“As a Local Council we hope that the Planning Authority will seriously consider these circumstances, and ensure that it gives priority to the characteristics that make Gozo a unique destination,” it concluded.

The proposed application was highlighted last month, when the residents of Qortin Street in Nadur, called for public support regarding this application and their “objection of the destruction of land which will inherently be invading our residency.”

They were backed by activist group Moviment Graffitti, who condemned the “destruction of more arable land and the uglification of Gozo due to unscrupulous development.”

In a statement, it expressed its concern over what it said is “the unprecedented rate of development that is threatening Gozo.”

Moviment Graffitti said that it “strongly supports these residents and invites other residents to follow their example and join the fight against the assault on Gozo.”
