Over the past year the pandemic has changed many things, including the way we have had to live our lives. However, despite this, on Gozo there has been a positive trend on the number of blood donations being made.
The National Blood Transfusion Service has said that when comparing the blood donation statistics in Gozo for 2019 with 2020 it was found that:
In 2019 – 1604 called to give blood and in 2020 – 1565 called to give blood – a reduction of 39 registrations. However, it was noted that:
In 2019 – 1339 gave blood, against in 2020 – when the number of donations made was 1343, an increase of 4 blood donations.
The Service highlighted the fact that considering the great blow that the pandemic has dealt us, the number of donations has still increased, “this should fill us with courage, in fact since the beginning of the year so far (6 weeks) we have already had 232 registrations and 204 donations of blood.”
This means that if we continue at the same rate, by the end of the year around 1700 blood donations will have been made in Gozo (an increase of around 400 donations over 2020) it said.
The next chance for Gozitans to donate blood at a session in Gozo will be on Tuesday, the 23rd of February, from 1pm till 5pm at the donation centre located in the Xewkija Clinic.
