The San Lawrenz Local Council has reacted to what has been revealed regarding “the purchase of a large quarry in Dwejra to be redeveloped.”
In a statement, the Council has expressed its concern in view of the news on the intention to rehabilitate the area and to make vertical and horizontal extensions on an existing quarry, in the locality of San Lawrenz.
It also pointed out out that this place is located in a Natura 2000 protected area and “any development in the Dwejra area will not only be causing irreparable damage but will also continue to suffocate Gozo to the detriment of the tourism sector.”
The Council said that it is concerned that there is currently a planning application under number PA3961/20.
The Council said that it would like to remind and bring to the attention of all those who will decide the strategic importance of the area from both the environmental, ecological and archaeological point of view.
The San Lawrenz Local Council said that it “commits itself to be at the forefront in safeguarding this place and urges associations and individuals of good will to join it in favour of the protection of the locality which is not only important but also for humanity.”
This San Lawrenz Local Council said that the statement was approved by the 4 PN councillors, while “the PL councillor asked to be disassociated from this statement.”
The application is for a quarry in Triq Qattara, San Lawrenz, to “rehabilitate existing area and carry out vertical and horizontal extensions to existing quarry.” The applicant is Vijay Berlia and the architect, Alexander Bigeni.
According to the Planning Authority the case is in the “screening process,” which is explained as, “contents are not yet regarded as a complete application. The details therein may be altered drastically, normally to address the issues raised in the Screening Letter issued by the Authority itself. The request may also never reach the full application stage.”

The councilor who disassociated himself is, of course, entitled to do so. He is however not entitled to keep his reason for doing so to himself. The residents of San Lawrenz and indeed all of Gozo should be informed of why he took this position.
When are we going to stop selling our little island to foreign people. Where our kids are going to live when they grow up.

Which foreign people are you talking about, Slide? Where is this mentioned in the article or the application?
As far as I can observe, it is mainly the Maltese investing in land and building permits (to subsequently leave some unfished structure on it for years).
Maybe time for a bit of soul searching and self-reflection, before going on the usual bigotted ‘the foreigners are no good’ rant.

And by the way – it is not easy for Foreigners to run a business on Malta and Gozo !!!
But do not forget the Millions of Euro running every year in Maltas pocket .
