The Malta Medical Association has argued that “the lives of the elderly are more important than populism and a budget deficit.”
In a statement, the Association accused the government of “promoting fake feel good factors and populism that will only increase death and disease from Covid.”
The Association said that it is “seriously concerned” that after Carnival public holidays daily numbers are consistently above two hundred daily cases.
“As a result Mater Dei intensive care and medical wards will soon be unable to cope with the caseloads. As of today the last additional ITU at Mater Dei may need to be opened.”
It said that, “while the Christmas period led to a disastrous increase, the measures announced before carnival have proven to be completely inadequate and a further rise has again occurred.”
The MAM said that it agrees with Minister Fearne on the contributing causes, and the prolongation of the ban on bars, “however the government must take responsibility for its failure to take more effective measures which were required.”
It stressed that “the prolongation of restaurant hours, and the removal of shielding from care homes for the elderly can only be labelled as political decisions which are only guided by populism, but bordering on the irresponsible from the medical point of view.”
The MAM pointed out that “while the total vaccination rate is progressing faster than other EU countries, the first patient from the tens of thousands between 60 and 80 years has still to be vaccinated.”
Furthermore, MAM said that it “is reasonably informed that numerous cases and 4 deaths have been reported in a single government elderly care home since vaccination has started, as while vaccines are highly effective they are not a 100% guarantee from Covid, especially when circulating numbers in the community are high.”
It highlighted that “the combination of encouraging more social activities, elderly people between the ages of 60-80 slowly sliding down the vaccination priority, together with the removal of shielding at homes will only contribute to make matters worse.”
MAM concluded by saying that it “encourages the government and the public health authorities to take measures which are adequate for the situation.”

MAM if you know anything about immunity you would know that worry is the worst poison for any ailment. I am sure you know this fact and the PM is not promoting fake feel good ( if so!) For no other reason but to fight the Covid with positive energy. Yes feeling good is the best weapon against any ailment and trusting that you are well aware of this I cannot fathom why you are protesting!
If people are elderly and have health issues they should take care of themselves. Everyone else should be allowed to get on with their lives. The best way to deal with any virus is to give your immune system a chance to fight it, oh and turn off the news as they only want you to stay frightened!
How very civil of you, were you born so selfish or did you develop as you went by? why don’t you suggest that older people go to the Gas chamber.
