The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses, reacting to the surge in Covid-19 cases, has said on Tuesday that it had requested a meeting with the Prime Minister and other social partners, adding that the situation at Mater Dei Hospital, is reaching “breaking point.”

“Measures and enforcement against Covid-19 are failing,” it said, and evaluations needed to be discussed on what further measures could be introduced to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

Meanwhile on Tuesday evening, Health Minister Chris Fearne, while acknowledging the increase in cases, announced in Parliament that higher fines, together with new Covid-19 measures, may be put into force in the coming days by the authorities.

The Health Minister said this could be due to the Covid-19 variant which is present on the islands, and the lack of discipline among the public.

He went on to say that the government must ensure that all measures are being followed and that they are enforced. He warned that the public must follow the preventative measures.

Dr Fearne stated that the main strategy is to “attack the virus” by means of the vaccination process. He reiterated that another vaccination centre in Gozo is due to open in the coming days.
