Work on the Gozo Aquatic and Sports Centre is progressing as scheduled – The project is expected to enter another phase in the coming week, the Ministry for Gozo has said.

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri visited the ongoing works on this €9 million project accompanied by the Director for Services in Gozo Joyce Farrugia and the project architect Godwin Sultana.

Minister Camilleri claimed that during the pandemic work was not halted, and had in fact intensified, with the project expected to enter another phase in the coming weeks.

Project architect Godwin Sultana explained how the excavation works have been completed along with the work of the existing structure and the exterior walls, waterproofing of the walls is currently underway and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

He went on to say that the works on the floor slabs in the gymnastics area, under the swimming pool, and the mechanical rooms are going well and are also in the final stages.

The remaining foundations will be laid under the old sports hall, which will only require excavation and concrete work, followed by waterproofing and flooring at the deepest levels of the project, he said.

Godwin Sultana also explained that the first phase of the trench for the main service infrastructure is also running in parallel with the said works.

The Minister for Gozo concluded by saying that “not only will Gozo have a new national indoor swimming pool but this project will be a holistic one as it will be accommodating more sports facilities under one roof.”
