While schools are closed due to the Covid-19 restrictions and the Easter holidays, refurbishment and maintenance work is underway in all schools, the Ministry for Education said.

In a statement, Education Minister Justyne Caruana explained that, “throughout the year there is a dedicated group of workers who take care of these upgrades so that the educational environment continues to improve.”

She added that during this current period “we have taken the opportunity to keep the work going throughout the day. While a great deal of infrastructure work is underway, including the construction of new schools, extensions and other refurbishments, there is another group of workers who are committed to ensuring that maintenance work continues as well.”

Work has been carried out in schools at Sannat, San Lawrenz, Nadur, Gharb, Victoria, and Xewkija, in Gozo, among others.

Sannat has had work on the drainage system and all kindergarten classes were painted. In San Lawrenz all the classes were painted, and in Victoria the first year classes were refurbished. In Gharb, rubber tiles have been removed so that now the ground will be covered entirely with synthetic turf. In Ghajnsielem new ceiling fans have been installed in all classrooms.

Gypsum work has been carried out in Nadur, while in Xewkija new sinks have been installed in all classrooms on the first floor and a project is underway to give the façade of the stage in the main hall a new look. New doors have been installed in San Lawrenz and Ghajnsielem and the corridors of some schools have also been painted.

Minister of Education Justyne Caruana thanked all the workers involved in this programme of work, which she said, “will ultimately be enjoyed by all educators and students.”
