Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri has addressed this week’s 40th Annual General Meeting of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR).

The international virtual event addressed, among other things, the enhancement of maritime life, the protection of biodiversity, and the future of tourism in islands in the Union, including Gozo.

Minister Camilleri reiterated the commitment of the Ministry for Gozo to continue working hand in hand with the CPMR and together to be a strong voice for the islands and regions at European level.

The Minister stressed that, “Our seas are a crucial resource for hundreds of people whose livelihoods depend on them, and therefore Malta and Gozo are ensuring sustainability in the fisheries sector.”

In the virtual presence of many other ministers and representatives from European islands, the Minister for Gozo said that Malta is “committed to stopping all illegal practices in this area and has therefore invested fully to have controls on all type of fishing.”

He reiterated how islands should consider sustainable fishing practices that have a positive impact on island economies.

The Minister also mentioned how the fisheries sector wants to find the direct help of governments and noted how the Maltese Government “has not stopped helping and supporting this sector, particularly in Gozo.”

He referred to the regeneration and strengthening works carried out for the benefit of fishermen in the ports of Marsalforn, Xlendi and Mgarr.

The Minister went on to say how during this pandemic the fishing sector took a big hit, particularly due to several restrictions including the closure of restaurants.

He concluded by stating that, “we will not stop now from supporting this very crucial industry and thus together we will then be able to overcome and address these challenges.”
