Heritage Malta is organising a Conservation Week at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta between the 25th and the 29th of May and an Open Day at the Conservation Division in Bighi, Kalkara on Sunday 31st May. Public lectures in English and Maltese will be delivered daily on various aspects of conservation and restoration.
At the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta six conservator-restorers from Heritage Malta’s Conservation Division at Bighi will each be giving power-point presentations on the conservation treatment of select works of art from the national collection focusing on the scientific nature, the ethics applied, the different stages of work in a conservation project and the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach.
This event will give the public an opportunity to experience at first hand conservation work which is usually held behind closed doors and will help to make part of the national collections accessible to all.
In the first lecture which is to be held on Monday, the 25th of May, Joseph Schiro will be giving an introduction in English on conservation and restoration. On Tuesday the 26th of May, Anthony Spagnol will be talking in Maltese about the conservation treatment of “Judith and Holofernes” by Le Valentin.
The next lecture on Wednesday, the 27th of May will be given jointly by Robert Cassar and James Licari on ‘Studies towards the Conservation of Sculptures at the National Museum of Fine Arts’ (in English).
On Thursday, the 28th of May, George Farrugia will give his presentation in Maltese on the ‘Conservation treatment of “St Anthony the Abbot” that is attributed to Cassarino.’
The final lecture on Friday, the 29th of May will focus on the ‘Conservation Treatment of the “Death of Cato” by Matthias Stom. This will be in English and will be delivered by Ray Spiteri.
Each presentation will be accompanied by the original work of art for the audience to have the opportunity to view it after its conservation treatment. All lectures start at 12.30pm and will be around 45 minutes long. Attendance is against a donation of Euros 5 or Euros 2.30 for a single lecture. Entry to the Open Day at Bighi is free of charge.
This week-long event at the National Museum of Fine Arts precedes the Open Day that will be taking place on Sunday, the 31st of May at the Conservation Division in Bighi, Kalkara.
