BirdLife Malta has announced an exciting event which will be held in Malta on the 22nd of May to commemorate International Day for Biological Diversity. On this day Malta will be joining withNature2020: a global collaborative artwork for biodiversity which will unite diverse communities across the world.

In this live international event, giant images of locally endangered plant and animal species will be created at 5pm local time in locations from east to west: a tapestry of species unfurling in real time, which will be filmed and transmitted on YouTube and other social media platforms.

The organisers said that the aim is to engage people with the need to protect their local ecosystem, wherever they are, and to create a visually memorable mass event that will focus a spotlight on the issue of biodiversity loss.

Human activity is now threatening a million species with extinction. The encroachment by humans into wild habitats and trade in live animals are leading directly to emergence of new infectious diseases, like Covid-19: a virus that has laid bare our own vulnerability as a species.Help need to create giant image of Yelkouan ShearwaterIn Malta, BirdLife Malta and Majjistral Nature and History Park have teamed up for Malta withNature 2020, and will be creating a giant image of the Yelkouan Shearwater – one of Malta’s breeding seabirds

This will be done by laying 500 pieces of coloured clothing on the ground to generate and photograph this from above to show it live. In this way BLM said that they will be raising awareness on the importance of protecting our local nature and ecosystem.

The public is being invited to donate clothes for this purpose. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions the public cannot be invited to participate in the event itself on the day, however BLM said that it has prepared a Google Form for the public to register their interest and donate clothing (in specific colours: WHITE, GREY or BLACK) for this purpose: https://bit.ly/3teT1ot.

After the event the clothes will be donated to the Inspire Foundation.
