The Gozo Business Chamber has welcome the launch of the fast ferry service between Gozo and Valletta today.

In a statement, the Chamber said that it consistently believes that accessibility in all its forms is “indispensable for Gozo’s economic development.”

The fast ferry service is another important milestone to ensure “multimodal forms of accessibility and connectivity between the two islands,” it said.

It added that, this service can lead the way for new economic niches especially in the cruise liner sector, while benefiting commuters and Maltese travellers alike.

The Chamber stressed that the Government’s decision to liberalise the market was essential for this service to being implemented. The price sensitive and consultative approach adopted by both operators also augurs well for the success of this venture, it said.

The Gozo Business Chamber concluded by saying that, “All this shows that Government’s commitment, coupled with the private sector’s willingness to invest can create a positive approach while finding solutions from which all can benefit.”

A welcome move, indeed, and I shall use it quite often.

As for “intermodal forms of accessibility”, I am still waiting to get out of Malta Buses details of connecting buses, particularly the 301/323 routes at Mgarr, which may become even more of a nightmare when tourist numbers rebound.

The summer is always a difficult time for Gozo residents on these overcrowded routes, to get to and from Victoria for work and shopping. Now, are these bus routes going to be totally overwhelmed with a potential of up to 300 pax getting off every arriving ferry, most without any cheap means of getting elsewhere in Gozo except by bus? And of course, a lot will have to return by bus to the ferry to get back to Malta. Any answers, Malta Buses?
