Summer is here and the constant demand for blood never ceases – Gozo donations

We are now in the full heat of summer, temperatures are soaring and the National Blood Transfusion Service said that this hot weather sometimes deters people from donating blood, and is therefore requesting the public to please come forward and donate.

Let’s help meet the constant demand for blood during the summer months, in fact 50 bags of blood are needed by the Service on a daily basis to help those who are currently being cared for in the hospitals of Gozo and Malta.

Gozitans will have the opportunity to make a much needed blood donation at any of the five sessions that will be taking place in Gozo during July, with the first one on Tuesday, the 4th of July.

They can be made at the District Health Centre in Xewkija, located in Triq tall- Hamrija, between the Primary School and the Bocci Club on any of the dates shown below:

Tuesdays – last registration 5:00pm

4th July from 1:00pm-5:00pm

11th July from 1:00pm-5:00pm

18th July from 1:00pm-5:00pm

Sunday – last registration 1:00pm

13th July 8:00am to 1:00pm

27th July 8:00am to 1:00pm.

The Service reminds everyone that it is important to always take your Identity Card, or Driving License or Maltese Passport and to drink plenty of water beforehand. Also, please encourage others to donate if possible.

Anyone currently waiting to take a Covid-19 test, or who has had the test and is waiting for the result, cannot give blood.

People with a fever or flu symptoms should wait 7 days before donating blood.

Anyone taking the vaccine must allow 48 hours to elapse before donating blood.

A blood donor must allow 7 days to elapse before taking the Covid-19 vaccine.
