The current heatwave being endured on the Maltese Islands has also been causing problems for baby bats, with the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta receiving calls from the public to help the young pups.

Since the 18th of June, the Team said it has received 7 calls (6 of them in the last 4 days) regarding baby bats found alone on the ground.

They explained that although it’s normal in the summer to receive calls about bat pups, the numbers over the last few days are unusually high and is probably due to the heatwave.

They stressed that local bats are not dangerous and the Team urged anyone that may come across a bat pup to call them on 9999 9505 and while waiting for the volunteers to arrive, place it in a shaded, cool area, and offer water.

These rescued pups are currently being fostered in hopes that they make it to adulthood, a task demanding a lot of patience and perseverance. Hopefully, some will make it, the Team said. The 10c coin shown in the photo is for size reference.

The Wildlife Rescue Team went on to say that “this month has been quite busy with rescues, and any form of support will be appreciated.”
