Restoration works have commenced on the lantern of the dome of Ghajnsielem parish church. The restoration was found to be necessary after cracks started to develop on the upper part, leading to water leakage and other related problems.

The lantern (upper part of the cupola) will be rebuilt from scratch. The work is being carried out by local master mason Leli Saliba and his son.

Mr Saliba starts work early in the morning before the sun reaches its height during the day, he is working from several wooden scaffolding structures which almost cover the entire dome.

The restoration project is expected to be completed by the end of this summer.
