Exactly 95 years ago today, an electricity supply from a power plant in St. Domenica Street in Victoria, Gozo was inaugurated, this was around 40 years after the electrical supply was introduced in Malta.
Writing on Facebook on Sunday, Enemalta explained that 95 years ago, the demand for electricity in Gozo was low and was in fact mainly used for lighting purposes.
This power plant had two 44kVA diesel units. Enemalta said that around 5 years later, additional equipment was set up to meet the increase in demand.
This power plant stopped operating in January 1959, as it was decided that supplying the island from Malta’s power station is more viable.
To supply this power two submarine cables were laid from Marfa to Comino and from Comino to Gozo.

I wish to add some information regarding the introduction of Lighting in Gozo. The first ever lighting was introduced in Qala Square at St Joseph Feast by the Cutajar Family who brought a Generator from America.
Then the Wife of Mr Gerald Strickland inaugurated Gozo Electricity in “IT-Tokk” Square.
