Historic day for local cycling with National Road Championship in Gozo

For the first time in the history of local cycling, a National Championship was decided with a unique race in Gozo.

The National Road Championship, organised by the Malta Cycling Federation, was held with one race on Sunday at the Ta’ Xhajma circuit in Gozo during which several National champions of various Categories were crowned.

This was the first time in the history of cycling in our country that a National Championship was decided with a unique race in Gozo. Historic day for local cycling with National Road Championship in Gozo Several Gozitan cyclists did well in the Youth and Children’s Categories – the Under-23 Category was won by Luke Borg of The Cyclist, after finishing first (1:22:02.49) in a final sprint with Stefan Scerri of Gozo CC with a minimum advantage of 0:00,29 seconds over the Gozitan Scerri. Brandon Sultana of Gozo CC (1:29:40.39) finished in third place.

In the Juniors Category Daniel Schembri of Mosta AF Sign Studio won this Championship when he finished his first 8 laps in a time of 1:06:34.36 in front of Darren Sultana of Gozo CC. Historic day for local cycling with National Road Championship in Gozo Jeaken Galea of Mosta AF Sign Studio won the Men’s Under-16 Category, finishing his four laps ahead of Lyan Muscat of TriGozo and Miguel Galea of The Cyclist.

Ryan Gatt of The Cyclist, won the Men’s Under-14 Category, after finishing three laps ahead of Chylen Fava and Sven Cini, both of TriGozo.

The 2.5km Under-12 Boys category was dominated by Liam Daly of Shamrock Stars ahead of two TriGozo cyclists, Giuseppe Borg and Aiden Muscat respectively. The same Girls Category was won by Nina Debono Curmi, also of Shamrock Stars. Historic day for local cycling with National Road Championship in Gozo The Malta Cycling Federation congratulated the winners and thanked all the cyclists for their participation, the club officials for their cooperation, as well as the Police, ARRTS Timing System, the Gozitan section of Transport Malta, the Horse Racing Administration for their collaboration, as well as to the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps of Gozo.

The Federation also thanked the Xewkija Local Council for their cooperation, “but above all a big thank you to the Nadur Local Council, Gozo, especially to Mayor Edward Said for his unreserved collaboration, as well as to the workers of the same Council Savior Sciberras and photographer Alessio Sultana.”
