Ramla Bay was today officially launched as the first Blue Flag beach in Gozo, by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono. The Minister said that Ramla Bay in Gozo, is the first beach on the island to fly a Blue Flag. “This is the result of months of preparation, commitment and coordination by the entities concerned to improve the experience for all those who visit the bay.”
The Gozo Minister praised the work of the Gaia Foundation, which in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), applied for and obtained the award of excellence, after receiving the pilot beach award in 2010, from The Foundation for Environmental Education.
To qualify for the Blue Flag, Ramla Bay had to achieve a number of criteria including environmental education and information, good water quality, environmental management, security and services and facilities offered. In light of the fact that the beaches around the island are one of the reasons why tourists choose to spend their holiday in Gozo, the Ministry for Gozo augured that more Gozo beaches should be awarded the same title.
Also present for the event was Dr Rudolf Ragonesi, the President of the Gaia Foundation and Mr Ray Azzopardi from the MTA, as well as other officials. They urged the public to collaborate in the maintenance and preservation of the beach.
The Blue Flag award was achieved as a result of joint work by the Ministry for Gozo, the MTA and the Gaia Foundation. The Public Cleansing Department within the Ministry is responsible for cleaning the beach, the MTA finance the wooden walkway and lifeguards, while members of the Gaia Foundation monitor and manage activities on the beach, the information centre and also help in protecting the environmentally sensitive sand dunes that are unique in the Maltese Islands. Educational activities during summer are organised by Gaia with the collaboration of Sharklab.
Dr Ragonesi thanked all the stakeholders involved that made it possible to obtain the prestigious Blue Flag for Ramla, which augments the Gold Quality Coast Award already obtained for the island of Gozo, which is known for its exceptionally clean waters. He said that Gozitans and visitors alike consider Ramla as a jewel in the crown of Gozo’s magnificent coastline, and the Blue Flag award is a wonderful recognition of this

Nice for everyone to read about Ramla Coast with the reward of the Gold Status and the Blue Flag,. What’s next now is someone to take care of that resting place with 630 graves and it’s deterioration be for this sickness start going to this lovely hot red sandy Beach.!!!!!
I am so glad that someone in Gozo knows that the beaches in Gozo are one of the reasons tourists choose Gozo as their holiday destination .Now that should be enough reason not to destroy Hondoq . Give Hondoq the Flag it deserves it and please DO NOT DESTROY HONDOQ !!!!!!!!
Fantastic news for the beach. Now you just have to sort out the over excited Umbrella/Lounger People, who have a habit of pouncing on people, as soon as they get out of the car, before they’ve even seen the beach. Over the years, heard cussing and arguments in front of kids and tourists. Heated at times. A bit of diplomacy please lads…

why is the walk way curved like that? do not look safe, specially for a person with a wheelchair
I hope that Hondoq Bay will be next to get the Blue Flag because from the comments I realize that this people really love this beautiful coastline and they do care for the safety of it.
That walkway was erected only temporarily for the great minister of Gozo to avoid getting sand in her shoes. It`s only short of a red carpet and a brass band. Oh! and a red ribbon.
