UHM Voice of the Workers has condemned the “attack” that took place on Friday against a Gozo Channel official while carrying out his duties at Mgarr Harbour.
The union, in a statement on Saturday, said it that had been informed that the passenger, who was about to board the ferry in his car, “allegedly disobeyed the directions given to him by this official during boarding, and instead started to board the ship immediately without waiting, in violation of the protocols in place.”
UHM added that, “although the Gozo Channel officer kept warning him to wait, the driver allegedly started driving to board the ship and when he saw that the official had followed him and also issued another warning, the driver got out of the car and hit the official who fell to the ground.”
“It is unacceptable for an employee who is carrying out his duties is in fact attacked and beaten on the job instead,” the union said.
The UHM noted with regret that “the culture of impunity has taken root in this country and will not be severed unless drastic steps are taken to suppress those who think they are greater than the law.”
The UHM concluded by saying that it “expects the Gozo Channel to take further measures to strengthen the security of its employees during the performance of their duties, on its ships, in its terminals and in its offices.”
According to reports the Police are investigating the incident.

Impunity that all started by the politicians and turned this Islands into a Mafia state.
Obviously there are two sides to this story and the crewman was probably as much to blame as the passenger. Having said that if you are using the ferry you follow the instructions of the crew. I used to work for a shipping company myself so how would I have dealt with it? I would have removed the passengers keys and moved his car out of the way of other passengers. Then called the police and made the passenger wait for the incident to be investigated. If it was found that the passenger was most to blame which it appeared he was the company would have had every right to stop him using the ferry. If it was proved that the crew member was rude to the passenger or hit him through the window which again it appeared he might have he should be fired.
Have you considered that the passenger had perhaps :Diaherria symtems and must go to the loo at that *moment in time*>>?i know of other problems ie., medication urine tablets and must also answer the call of nature , still its no excuse and naturally way out of order which i reckon shoule be dealth with in a court of law. Its just a thought you understand..
