Restoration works on the two bell towers and parts of the façade of the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta. in Zebbug, are to get underway through an investment of € 106,000, by the Eco Gozo Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri made the announcement today, and stressed that as has happened with other parishes, the Government is serving as a shoulder for the Church to also see that the historical heritage of our country is preserved.
He explained that this contribution will help with the restoration of the two bell towers – works will involve the demolition and reconstruction of the existing bell towers, the replacement of parts of the entablature, the framing and the restoration of other damage to the façade suffered over the years.
Minister Camilleri said that about three years ago the parish of Zebbug had commissioned a technical report on the structure of the bell towers and it had become clear that there is a structural weakness. Therefore, urgent intervention was needed to restore them.
In July 2019 the parish received the necessary permits to start the restoration works and the Ministry for Gozo will be financially assisting this parish, the Minister said.
The parish archpriest Dun Gwann Sultana, thanked the Ministry for Gozo and the Government, saying that with their intervention this long-awaited project will now come to fruition. “This project will also allow this picturesque church to return to its glory,” he said.
