The Minister for Inclusion and Quality of Life Julia Farrugia Portelli has visited ‘Dar il-Fjuri’ which is operated by Agenzija Sapport in Victoria, Gozo.

The home, which provides care to residents 24 hours a day, was launched in 2016 as part of the ‘Progett Socjeta Gusta.’

Landscaping work is currently underway at this residence with an investment of around € 30,000, the Minister said.

She explained that there are currently nine people with disability residing at the home, four men and five women, aged between 21 and 71.

Residents are provided with support so that they can receive the necessary service, including assessments and interventions by occupational therapists and other appointments, both from government departments and the private sector. Case reviews of all residents are also conducted.

Four of the residents attend the day centre that Agenzija Sapport has within the Ghajnsielem Learning Hub, while five other residents benefit from activities in the community through interventions by the support workers. They participate in activities with other residents in homes that the Agency has in Malta as well as participate in community activities in Gozo itself.

The Minister said that, “what is carried out at Dar il-Fjuri is the realisation in practice of the purpose of the residential service, that offers an opportunity to people with disabilities, who for whatever reason cannot continue to live at home with their family so that they can live independently in the community.”

“We are helping them feel that they are part of society and equal to others. We are ensuring that they have the quality of life they deserve,” she added.

There are 27 people working at Dar il-Fjuri and during her visit the Minister was accompanied by the Chief Executive of Agenzija Sapport, Ruth Rose Sciberras.

Ms Sciberras explained the ongoing landscaping and modernisation works to improve the facilities at Dar il-Fjuri, which is part of a continuing programme of works throughout all their homes, aimed at offering the best environment for customers and employees, while safeguarding their health and safety.

Agenzija Sapport’s commitment is also to offer residential services with individual programmes tailored to the individual’s needs with an emphasis on independent living and community inclusion, she said.
