Opposition calls for urgent meeting to discuss serious situation of Gozo CourtThe Nationalist Party has called for an urgent meeting of the Standing Committee for Gozo Affairs to discuss the serious situation in which the Gozo Court finds itself.

The request was made on Thursday morning by the Opposition Speaker for Gozo Chris Said, the Speaker for Justice Karol Aquilina and Members of Parliament Kevin Cutajar and Joe Ellis.

They said in a statement that, “by a request made to the Chairman of the Committee, Minister Anton Refalo, we drew attention to the fact that although now more than a week has passed since all the Lawyers who practice and appear before the Gozo Court have taken action by not attending the hearings, the Government has not taken any action to address this situation.”

“The Labour Government, in particular the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri and the Minister for Justice Edward Zammit Lewis, are remaining silent and doing nothing to enable the Gozo Court to work efficiently and effectively as appropriate in a healthy democracy,” they said.

They concluded by saying that, “this attitude of the Government is leading to great injustices with anyone who needs to go before the Gozo Court for the protection of his rights and shows the lack of respect by the Government towards all the workers of the Gozo. Court, legal professionals and Magistrates who all play an essential role in the administration of justice in Gozo.”
