The Malta Union of Teachers has said that “instead of having a budget that gives a vision to the educational field, we have one that continues to ignore the challenges in this field.”

The MUT went on to say that the union and educators were not involved in the budget consultation process, and in this budget “we are seeing the result of this shortcoming.”

It stated that, “in this budget, as many others have agreed, one notices mostly what has been left out rather than what has been said.”

The union argued that the budget “leaves out a plan to overcome a number of challenges in the field. For example, the plan for the crisis of teacher shortages has been left out, which as we know in recent weeks has had consequences for a number of educators who received deployment in the last days before school started.”

It added that “one would have expected it to at least be recognised as a problem with a plan for the coming years.”

“Incentives to attract young people to the profession have also been left out. Measures have been left out to give educators the tools to work. A long-term vision for the educational field that the country so desperately needs has been left out,” the MUT said.

The MUT stated that the Government “is not taking the difficulties in the field of education seriously and is not paying attention to what the educators are saying.”

The union concluded by saying that it will be looking at the detailed estimates and speeches by the Education Ministry and hoped there will be more answers to these problems.
