An application has been filed before the Environment Planning Review Tribunal by the Qala Local Council asking for a decision on the controversial appeal for a yacht marina and tourist village at Hondoq.
In a statement, the Council said that this application for the intensive development had been turned down unanimously by the Planning Authority, but the developer had appealed. Since then the appeal has been heard by the Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.
It pointed out that the last sitting before the Tribunal was held a year ago, when it was put off for a site visit and a decision. “There has been no word from the Tribunal from that day till now.”
The Councils stated that “decisions should be taken by the Tribunal within a maximum of 18 months from the first sitting, but this has gone well beyond that date.”
“We feel that this is an excessively long time to wait for a decision. Whilst planning permits are issued at a fast pace, a decision which should give the people of Qala and those who love Hondoq, some sense of legal certainty, has been left pending for years,” the Council said.
It concluded by saying that, “will continue to fight for Hondoq even in the face of threats and petty vendettas from some quarters.”

You’re spot on Peter. ‘Pristine’ Hondoq comprises a concrete car-park right on the water’s edge, a free-for-all ‘campsite’, an abandoned quarry resembling a land-fill site, an ugly reverse osmosis plant adjacent to the beach, a couple of scruffy kiosks and…oh yes, the tiny beach itself. Let’s hope that Qala Council save this Gozitan jewel from any development!
