Gozo SPCA in Victoria currently have 20 dogs at the centre. There are some dogs in crates and cages – not proper kennels. Some dogs are also sleeping in the outside yard at night, which, as the centre said, is not acceptable other than as a short term solution.

With sanctuaries across Malta full, and demand for space likely to increase further with the raiding of puppy farms, Gozo SPCA said that they are looking to add a couple of kennels upstairs at the centre.

It explained that one of the major areas they are not compliant with for the Sanctuaries Act, is no proper isolation/quarantine area – all animals are supposed to go into isolation for 7-days after entering a sanctuary. These new kennels, would move them in the right direction.

The centre said that it also needs to upgrade their kitten cages, some of which are 20-years old. ”There is probably not enough space to increase the number of cages, but we want to make them more friendly for the kittens, and also easier for volunteers to clean the cages.”

”The plan is for the cages to interconnect when needed, probably by having a ladder from top to bottom, which can be removed when kittens need separating. This would also allow us to care for adult cats outside of kitten season,” Gozo SPCA said.

A fundraising appeal for this work was launched on Sunday morning on facebook, and Gozo SPCA said it has already received enough pledges to get quotes on the 2 new kennels.

Any funds remaining will go towards the new kitten cages, which is less essential, but still required.

The Centre said those paying by SMS you will get a thank you sms back for each one sent, if it works. Some Melita contact customers cannot use monthly payment to pay, need to top up first.

Gozo SPCA does not have Revolut as currently its doesn’t allow charity accounts.
