The Ministry For Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights are launching the campaign ‘Sajjar Frisk u Lokali’ to promote the use of local fresh produce that our land provides us with.

Launched by Minister Anton Refalo, he explained that the aim of this campaign is to raise awareness and appreciate and use the products of Maltese and Gozitan farmers and pastoralists.

He stressed the”responsibility towards those who are working and striving, even against the elements of nature, non-stop and with sacrifice. From here, things get trickier, and this is where the true meaning of life lies.”

the Ministry said that Malta has a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and meats to appeal to our varied Maltese palate – and this campaign is meant to celebrate it….

To participate, one has to start by liking and following the Facebook page ‘Agrikoltura’ and follow the rules. Together with family or friends, create a recipe using locally seasonal fresh produce and upload photos or videos on the ‘Sajjar Frisk u Lokali’ Facebook event page.

The photos or videos must feature the (i) contestant buying meat, fruits and/or vegetables from the local market, (ii) ingredients, (iii) cooking process and (iv) final dish.

The top 10 dishes with the most Facebook likes will be selected and the judges will then choose their top 3 preferred dishes.

The competition will be open until the 7th of January. ”Participants using produce not locally produced will be disqualified. Products that one cannot find in Malta will be accepted as long as they are not an integral part of the recipe, however extra points will be given to participants who use all and exclusively local produce.” the Ministry said.

The competition is open for participants aged 10 and older but will be judged in 4 categories according to age:

Group 1 – 10 to 16 years of age

Group 2 – 16 to 35 years of age

Group 3 – 36 to 60 years of age

Group 4 – over 60 years of age

Supervising adults must ensure that all Health and Safety Regulations are followed. It is important to note that photos on Facebook are to be uploaded by supervising adults and not by underage participants.
