BirdLife Malta was first established on the 25th of January 1962, at the time it was known as the Malta Ornithological Society.
BirdLife Malta turns 60 today – Malta’s oldest environmental NGO is celebrating 60 years of work, successes and achievements.
The NGO said that this year will be a time to reflect on the past 60 years with particular appreciation to all those who dedicate time and energy for the protection of birds and their habitats, from the founders to the various volunteers along the years.
In a statement BirdLife explained that 2022 will be a time to celebrate the success stories such as the early education work in schools, the setting up and running of four nature reserves, the various bird studies and the professional running of the BirdLife Malta Ringing Scheme.
With a solid scientific understanding and a proactive approach to the challenges it faced, BirdLife Malta said that, “today it is not just a household name but a highly credible and influential organisation that has had a positive impact on birds, their habitats and our country’s well-being.”
During this year BirdLife Malta said that it will not only be celebrating the past but it will also celebrate – together with the general public – the beauty of nature and birds.
The public is being urged to follow BirdLife Malta on social media or become members to participate in the various events we intend to hold during the year.
BirdLife Malta President Darryl Grima explained that, “the most important part of celebrating an anniversary is also looking at how relevant we remain today and for the future. Nature, biodiversity, and the entire world are being heavily challenged by human activity and decisions, or the lack of them.’
He added that, “nature needs to be protected like never before. From a local point of view, illegal hunting, trapping and the loss of the natural footprint of the Maltese Islands remain the worst enemy of nature while on a global level we need to do our part in fighting climate change, plastic waste and pollution.”
Grima concluded by saying that, “BirdLife Malta promises to remain the flag-bearer of nature protection and will be on the front line to push for positive changes in our country’s approach towards biodiversity.”
BirdLife said that it is also proud to be part of the BirdLife family – a partnership of over 115 national organisations which form the world’s largest and oldest nature conservation partnership promoting global, European and Mediterranean issues. BirdLife International is this year also celebrating its 100th anniversary.
