The government and the Church have once again joined forces to strengthen the work in the community, this time in Gozo, it said.
The social agreement sealed this week and worth over €500,000 includes the running of the Dar Emmaus Shelter, which welcomes both homeless and vulnerable people who need immediate help.
The agreement was reached between the Ministry of Social Justice and Solidarity, The Family and Children’s Rights, together with the Kenn u Tama’ Foundation, which runs the Dar Emmaus Shelter. This will guarantee funding for the next three years, amounting to €512,460.
The signing took place at the premises of Dar Emmaus, in the presence of Minister Michael Falzon, Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, Monsignor Joe Vella Gauci and FSWS Chief Executive Alfred Grixti, among others.
The government explained that this is the third social agreement sealed by the social ministry for this year as part of an ongoing plan of support being given to NGOs to carry out more work with vulnerable people.
“We will continue to deliver our services in Gozo as well. I am convinced that we will carry on to do more good together, always in the interest of our society. Our mission is to identify more cases that need more help. After all, there is a family, there are children, there are vulnerable people,” said Minister Falzon.
It was explained that 12 beds will be available at the shelter, along with psychosocial support and help to reintegrate these people into society.
“This government believes in collaboration, not only between ministries but also with the Church in Gozo. We are seeing that in Gozo we are successfully extending the services that are being provided in Malta,” said the Gozo Minister Minister.
On the same day that the agreement was reached, a visit was also made to Trionfi House in Victoria, which was given by the Church to the FSWS for a temporary period of two years. This house will accommodate individuals and families who for various reasons end up homeless.
This agreement will be until until the works are carried out on the five apartments bought by the government to accommodate families with social challenges, the government said.
