Heritage Malta, through its Institute of Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage (ICMCH), is responsible for the provision of academic and vocational courses in collaboration with higher educational institutes both in Malta and overseas.
This July ICMCH will be once again offering the ‘Introductory Course to Conservation Studies’ to be held between the 6th of July and the 24th of July 2009, from Mondays to Fridays. This course is aimed at the general public. It is also aimed at preparing the prospective conservation-restoration student, who requires a pass in the B.Cons.(Hons) entrance examination, that is a compulsory special entry requirement for admission to the degree course.
The Introductory Course is spread over three weeks from 9am til 4pm daily. The teaching time is divided equally between theory lectures and practical sessions, with breaks. The course addresses archaeology, architecture and history of art for conservation studies, as well as an introduction to conservation science, artistic techniques and documentation practices in conservation-restoration.
Practical sessions are held in the four areas of study that are also offered in the B.Cons.(Hons) degree course: paintings and polychrome sculpture; ceramics, glass, metals and stone; textiles; and books and paper. Other practical sessions are held in line drawing and chemistry for conservation, both of which are important to conservation studies. At the end of the course students are awarded a certificate of attendance for their participation.
The fee for attendance is €140. Students in possession of the students’ card pay a reduced fee of €70.
The application form can be downloaded from the HM website http://www.heritagemalta.org/education/highereducation/heducation.html
or collected from the ICMCH Office at Heritage Malta, Bighi. Applications are to be sent by Tuesday, 30th June 2009.
A career in conservation-restoration requires an academic formation at university level. ICMCH offers the B.Cons.(Hons) course, which is a degree conferred by the University of Malta.
