Now that another scholastic year is coming to an end, the maintenance and the refurbishment works programme carried out in schools within the Gozo College are continuing as normal and they are expected to increase within the summer months.

Workers deployed at the Education Division within the Ministry for Gozo are now involved in the restructuring and refurbishment of the main hall at the Sannat primary school.

This school incorporates kindergarten and primary classes for students from Sannat and Munxar, as well as the Special Unit that caters for children with special needs from all over Gozo.

Another section offers space for music lessons to Gozitan students who apply to attend the School of Music in Gozo. Therefore, works connected with the main hall at this school, included plans that could meet the varied logistical and practical demands of this school.

The relative design was drafted by a teacher of art within the Gozo College, and is inspired by elements that form the emblem of the college. Two trolleys executed by workmen of the division, will provide additional storage space beneath the stage whilst also serving to extend stage space as the need arises.

Another essential element that formed part of these works, was the acquisition of a hydraulic lifter that has been installed at the back of the stage. This lifter will facilitate and considerably improve access to the stage especially with regards to children with disabilities.

Fire-retardant materials and paints were used throughout, new sanitary facilities were also installed. The sound and light systems were totally replaced whilst new apertures are currently being installed and new seating facilities will replace the old ones.

This project will contribute towards the realisation of a programme of works, through which, during the past three years, halls at the Xaghra and Xewkija schools were also significantly restructured. These halls are also used for activities held within their respective localities after school hours.

Expenditure related with this project was partially financed through the Ministry for Gozo’s funds, with additional financial assistance forthcoming from a substantial donation by Rotary Club Malta. This mainly covered the acquisition and installation of the hydraulic lifter, the sound system and a new projector.

Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, together with officials from the Education Division in Gozo, joined Mr Simon Bonello, Rotary Club Malta President and Mr Frank Salt, on a site visit while works were being carried out. The Head of School, Mr Saviour Portelli, explained how the works on the new hall, which are expected to be concluded within the coming weeks, will be better equipped to cater for the complex needs of this school.

Minister Debono referred to the priority which the Ministry for Gozo gives to works related with the educational sector in Gozo. This especially relates to more comfortable and welcoming environments that are more accessible and offer better security to students in Gozitan schools.
