For the second consecutive year, a Lenten installation is being exhibited in Ghajnsielem for the duration of Holy Week, while reminding those who are in some way going through a difficult time, including the victims of this Covid-19 pandemic, their families and especially for those in Ukraine.
This year’s project consists of a large cross – The Cross, Jesus and You – which has been set up in the centre of Our Lady of Loreto square.
The cross, which is illuminated at night, is a 15 metre high steel structure covered with recycled wooden pallets. 60 crosses were also placed around the base so that visitors can place flowers for victims of the Ukrainian war.
The Ghajnsielem Local Council said that the idea of this installation is to connect the reality and the situation we are currently living with in this time of Lent where we remember how Jesus with his passion and death, redeemed us from our sins.
Placed end to end the steel would stretch about 400 metres in length, while the wood used would reach about 1.2 kilometres in length. The work started in February and took about 7 weeks to complete by a small team of volunteers with a large heart and plenty of dedication, the Council said.
This installation as been completed with the full support of the Local Council in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo, the Parish, l-Ghaqda Drammatika and l-Ghaqda tal-Armar.
Deputy Mayor Franco Ciangura is the person who came up with the thoughts and idea for this initiative, and was assisted by several volunteers.
On the Church Square there is also a large image depicting the face of Christ made of 4,500 recycled plastic bottles, completed with the support of Cast-Out and Eco-Gozo.
