The Greening the Islands Observatory is holding a 2-day meeting in Gozo, which concludes tomorrow. The meeting aims to boost local and state sustainable transition.

The GTI explained that it brings together key Maltese stakeholders and authorities, as well as leading international institutions and innovators to explore solutions in support of Gozo’s strategy for sustainable transition, as a pilot for the decarbonisation of the entire island state.

The high-level, operative meeting will be hosted by the local government, involving key local stakeholders, Ministries Representatives, Corporates, Universities and Industry Association Members and will focus on energy, water, mobility, waste, and sustainable agriculture topics.

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri addressed the conference on Thursday morning, where he said that in recent years Gozo has “undergone substantial changes in terms of sustainability and the use of renewable energy.”

He mentioned among others the regeneration of the reverse osmosis plant in Hondoq, which, the Minister said, has given more dependence on the use of water for Gozitans.

“As a Government we are committed to more of these initiatives as well as continuing to provide more open spaces to our families,” Minister Camilleri said.

The meeting also includes sessions on air quality, ports electrification, bicycle business models and policy infrastructure, and best practices by the GTI Corporate Members.

The GTI Observatory aims to promote public-private collaboration, develop policy recommendations, and create coalitions for tenders based on the multisectoral data gathered through the islands stakeholder.

In October 2019, the Ministry for Gozo, The Gozo Business Chamber and Greening the Islands have signed an agreement granting Gozo the qualification of “Green Island Member” in the GTI Observatory, with the support of the Gozo Regional Development Authority (GRDA).

The GTI Observatory meeting is open to the Gozo and Malta community in presence at the Gozo Innovation Hub.
