Vodafone Malta Foundation have announced that they will be travelling the Silk Road by supporting Vodafone Malta employee and cyclist Maria Vella-Galea, in this year’s Betfair Lifecycle Challenge 2009, a gruelling annual event organised by the Lifecycle organisation.

This year’s event, which will take place between the 6th and 20th August, will take the cyclists and backup team over 2000km from Istanbul through Turkey and Syria to Damascus and promises to be a gruelling challenge of mind, body and spirit, through tough terrain in hot conditions. Temperatures have already soared past 40 degrees.

The event is all about commitment and determination. Training started in April and intensifies as the weeks progress. Cyclists will clock approximately 5,300 kilometres in fifteen weeks, training on a daily basis. The size of our island makes training challenging since cyclists will have to cover the same roads over and over again.

The Lifecycle Organisation was launched to highlight the plight of patients suffering from end-stage renal disease and is a voluntary non-profit organisation that also promotes organ donation by organising events and campaigns. Lifecycle also encourages people to carry a donor card.

“The event organised by the Lifecycle Organisation has now become an established annual event that mobilises young people into embarking on a journey of philanthropy and physical endurance, commitment and determination,” said Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson at Vodafone Malta Foundation. “We encourage the generous Maltese public to make precious donations towards a good cause.”
